Dreams really do come true! Sporting your active wear (leggings, track bottoms, sneakers etc.) outside of the gym is an actual thing now! It is a full-fledged trend and was even added to the Merriam Webster Dictionary. The term “Athleisure” basically means using active wear for fitness – whether it be running, circuit training, Zumba – and then re-purposing them for other “leisurely” activities.
Elizabeth Holmes from the Wall Street Journal describes it as “The apparel industry’s term for the casual, athletic-inspired way of dressing rooted in leggings, tank tops and sneakers. Athleisure promises a whole day’s wear from a single outfit, taking women from spin class to the coffee shop to the office and then out for a cocktail at happy hour.”
If you are curious how to work the athleisure trend into your wardrobe, think of how big florals are for the springtime. Except, athleisure can be worn all year round, with changes according to the weather and changing of the seasons. According to a Forbes article, “Millennials are currently the largest demographic in the U.S. They account for almost 80 million out of from the 319 million living in the country, which is roughly 28% of the entire population. A combination of this and the fact that there is a general shifting trend to eat and live healthier in the U.S,” is the reason for the rise of athleisure.
