It may seem fool-proof, but skipping breakfast before your sweat session in the morning can actually do you more harm than good.
We know, there have been studies that show exercising on an empty stomach can actually benefit your workout, but other reports have proven different. Fasted workouts can end up impairing your performance since you have no fuel in your system. You won’t have the proper energy to exercise at the same intensity you would if you had eaten prior, which can translate to less overall calories burned.
Everyone is different—you may find that you’re fine without eating before, but others may need a little grub for an extra push to finish that run. If you do need a snack, choose one that focuses on simple carbs rather than protein to offer your body fuel—an hour before your workout.
Try one of these:
- Half a slice of whole wheat bread with one tablespoon crunchy peanut butter
- Quarter cup of blueberries mixed with half a cup of yogurt
- Some crackers with an ounce of cheese
- A banana
- Applesauce
