5 Foods That Will Help You Shed Pounds

By Barbara Baez @BarbaraMBaez · On January 2, 2014

If you’re looking to lose weight this year, eating the proper food is one step in the right direction. To help, munch on these healthy options to kick-start your weight loss:

1. Eggs

Set aside all those misconceptions about this breakfast classic and chow down on the whole egg. In fact, half of the protein found in eggs stimulates the release of the hormone glucagon that aids in fat burning and actually fights off belly fat.

2. Chia Seeds

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and iron, chia seeds are great for weight loss because they act like a sponge, absorbing sugar and stabilizing blood sugar levels. Because they are so high in fiber, these little seeds can hold up to twenty times their weight in water, so when they’re mixed with liquid they plump up and absorb excess moisture. Try adding them into your oatmeal!

3. Quinoa

A gluten-free favorite, this grain is a complete protein source because of its amino acids and stress-busting B vitamins. Eat it plain; add it to your salad or breakfast, the options are endless.

4. Yogurt

A belly-flattening favorite, yogurt is packed with probiotics, bacteria that may help reduce the amount of fat your body absorbs. Many choose the Greek non-fat kind because it only contains half as much sodium as the regular. Be forewarned, you may end up with a yummy addiction!

5. Fruits and Veggies

To help you lose a few extra pounds, fruits and veggies will be your new best buds. This is because water can aid in helping you slim down and those kinds of food contain a lot of H20. Try snacking on some broccoli, grapefruit, spinach, or radishes to help fill you up and eat less.
