5 Ways To Survive Holiday Parties Without Packing On The Pounds

By Barbara Baez @BarbaraMBaez · On December 5, 2013

Holiday partyThe last thing you want to be doing during the Christmas/Hanukkah season is feeling sorry for yourself because you couldn’t control yourself at the many holiday parties you’ll be attending. You can still “eat, drink and be merry,” in moderation that is. Use these five ways to get through the many festivities without gaining those unwanted extra pounds:

1.     Eat before you go.

With endless amounts of food and drinks, holiday parties can be a nightmare for people trying to stay fit. One of the most important rules is to make sure you eat beforehand. Hungry people are more likely to head straight for first edible thing in site. If you have a snack before you go, you’ll be able to survey the buffet table and make better and healthier decisions.

2.     Find the greens.

Many events will have platters full of veggies and salad. You should make your way over to the green side of the table and load up your plate with healthy options. That way you’re less likely to have room on your plate, or in your stomach for greasy, fatty and sugary foods.

3.     Socialize!

The holidays are a time to spend with family and friends, not waiting by the kitchen for the next appetizer to come out. Quit stuffing your face; mingle with everyone instead of stopping at every food table.

4.     Carry a glass of water.

The alcohol may be flowing nonstop during the festivities but these are liquid calories that can lead to quick weight gain. You don’t need liquor to have a good time, so your best bet is to always have a glass of H20 on hand to keep you from heading to the bar. But if you must have a drink, try opting for a wine-spritzer instead of that fatty eggnog.

5.     Indulge.

Cakes, pies, cookies, oh my! The dessert table spread is the usually most anticipated and hazardous of the night, but don’t be afraid. There is no harm in indulging a little if you see a freshly baked cookie tray calling your name. The key is always to walk away after you’ve helped yourself.
