At 42, Mary J. Blige is in the best shape of her life. The powerhouse singer has worked hard for her fit and firm physique, but has found it increasingly tougher to maintain her figure as do many women today.
Recently gracing the cover of Shape this past December, the nine-time Grammy Award-winner flaunted her flat abs. To help her stay in tip-top shape, she has a low-carb, gluten-free diet and cardio workouts to thank.
“The treadmill is fine, but running outdoors gives me the best results,” Blige explains in her Shape interview. “I try to log six to eight miles a week. I could be in the worst mood, but when I do my cardio I feel much, much better.”
With the help of personal trainer, JR Allen, the singer does three sessions a week that focus primarily on sculpting while also mixing up exercises with different gear and activities. Along with her cardio workouts, Mary also does strength training and swims. She is happy to see that the swimming workouts, in which she had to overcome a longtime fear, have helped her get those chiseled abs.
While Mary’s workouts are a big part of her lifestyle, her diet is equally so. She recently stopped eating sugar and dairy and switched to a low-carb, gluten-free diet, and has never felt better. In addition to overhauling her diet, Blige also stopped drinking alcohol cold-turkey after the tragic 2012 death of her friend Whitney Houston and feels stronger than ever.
“When I’m fit, I can conquer the world,” Blige said. “I love the way I look and feel right now and am truly comfortable in my own skin.”
