The Day After Thanksgiving Detox: 5 Steps To Help You Bounce Back!

By Barbara Baez @BarbaraMBaez · On November 26, 2012

When surrounded by family and friends, it’s hard to say no to good food. Whether you drank a little too much, had two or three helpings or had a slice of every pie/cake available, no worry. We’ve got a great day-after Thanksgiving detox for you!

Many people forget the true purpose of a detox which is to:

  • Release toxins from your body by stimulating your liver;
  • Improve circulation throughout the body;
  • Refuel your body with healthy nutrients;
  • Eliminate waste through skin, kidneys and the intestines

If you keep these things in mind, this will be just the detox your body is craving!

1. Sweat it out at the gym.

For the last 4-5 days you probably have been leading the sedentary lifestyle. Remind your body that it’s time to go back to work. Intense cardio will release toxins from your body, warm up your muscles and make you feel great!

2.Don’t stop eating.

Just because you may have ate a bit too much over the weekend doesn’t mean you should go cold turkey (no pun intended.)  Starving yourself is never a good thing and will slow down your metabolism and lead to binge eating. Your stomach has probably stretched and your old meal plans may leave you feeling hungry, but keep eating small meals multiple times each day. Eventually your stomach will shrink back!

3.  Lemon Water is your new best friend.

Lemons are high in antioxidants and vitamin C, making them a great way to cleanse your digestive tract. Drinking warm lemon water has been known to flush the body of toxins, speed hydration, and improve the immune system.

4. Spend some time on your Yoga Mat.

The twisting and turning in yoga will help fresh blood and oxygen get to your liver and will aide in the release of toxins. Plus Yoga will stretch your muscles which are probably very sore  and tight from all of the traveling you have been doing.

5. Get friendly with fiber and folate.

Foods rich in dietary fiber will help cleanse your digestive tract. Try whole grains (brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa), fruits (bananas, apples, raspberries, grapes), and vegetables (broccoli, carrots and brussel sprouts). These same foods, in addition to beans, will help you replenish your folate reserves which are depleted when we drink alcohol. Folate helps the body produce and maintain new cells and prevents changes to DNA that may lead to cancer.
