In Barbie’s 57-year history, the iconic doll has only ever been known for her busty top and skinny waist form. But times are changing! Mattel has introduced three new body types for the doll: petite, tall, and curvy. Not only that, the dolls are now more diverse than ever, with different color skin and hair types.
So what does this say about American beauty moving forward? Many women feel uncomfortable with their bodies since most of us don’t fit the “norm.”
We already have a preconceived notion about what beauty and body image should be, but maybe this small change will continue for good rather than bad.
“Ultimately, haters are going to hate,” COO Richard Dickson says. “We want to make sure the Barbie lovers love us more—and perhaps changing the people who are negative to neutral. That would be nice.”
