September is best known for pumpkin spice lattes and all things “back to school”. But, did you know that September is also Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness month? Leukemia and lymphoma are both blood related cancers, causing an estimated 50,000 deaths – and there is still no cure. According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, research states that approximately every 3 minutes one person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer. These blood cancers are expected to account for almost 10% of the deaths from cancer in 2016, based on the estimated total of 595,690 cancer deaths. To help reduce these numbers, foundations such as Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research work to help raise awareness and funds to battle these diseases. This foundation specifically works to raise money for less toxic treatments and to ultimately find a cure.
From September 1st through the 25th, Lucille Roberts will be raising money to help the Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research in their mission. See below for more details about the foundation and how you can be a positive force to help to find a cure for this disease.
In 1996, Grammy-nominated songwriter and philanthropist, Denise Rich, lived every parent’s worst fear as one of her three daughters, 27-year-old actress Gabrielle was diagnosed with myelogenous leukemia (AML). AML is a slowly progressing and uncommon type of blood-cell cancer, starting in the bone marrow. Gabrielle lost her battle to this disease, but her dream lives on in the work of the organization created in her memory, Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. It was Gabrielle’s idea to create a foundation that would fund the best scientific researchers to create less toxic treatments, and ultimately find a cure. Her mother and sisters, Daniella and Ilona, believed the best way to honor Gabrielle’s memory was to turn their extraordinary grief into a positive force to help others.
The mission of Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research is to encourage the development of more effective therapies for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and other related cancers. The foundation funds research to improve the efficacy of cancer treatments, reduce their toxicity and improve the quality of life of patients with leukemia or lymphoma.
