Winter is unfortunately here to stay for another six weeks thanks to Punxsutawney Phil. And with this season comes a whole lot of snow (in most parts of the country), frigid temperatures, and our least favorite: the common cold and flu.
We know you may want to do everything possible to stay warm inside and not be exposed to the chilly weather, but that just won’t do for many of us. So if you do catch the dreaded cold or flu, don’t worry! Add these five foods to your “sick diet” to boost your immune system and get over your sickness in record time.
1. Lots and LOTS of fluids – We all probably don’t realize the power of H20 until we’re sick. Other beverages such as ginger ale, peppermint or ginger tea, and fruit juices can be good options too. Drinking these will not only help a stuffy nose, upset stomach, and give you more energy, but they will also just make you go to the bathroom more often to help flush out the cold.
2. Citrus fruits – Ok, so vitamin C won’t end up making your cold go away instantly, but you shouldn’t skip fruit all together. The soft white skin found on oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and other citrus fruits contain flavonoids, which increase immune system activity. Munch away!
3. Soup and broth – Chicken noodle soup for the soul—and for when you’re sick! That and others like miso, veggie broth, and beef bouillon will help you stay hydrated along with drinking fluids. Plus, the hot liquids also warm the body from chills and also open up sinus passages to relieve congestion.
