Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease that affects the lungs and digestive system, making it difficult to breathe and absorb nutrients from food. 30,000 children and adults have CF in the US. 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. 10 million Americans are symptom-less carriers, 1 out of every 30 people.
Twenty-five years ago, the hope for children with CF to grow up, have successful careers and start families of their own seemed a distant dream. Today, with the help of our extraordinary community of patients, families, volunteers and donors, that dream is becoming a reality. By building on our past success and dedicating ourselves to finding new ways to address the challenges ahead, we know the future for those with CF will be brighter still. We need you now – more than ever before to sustain critical momentum in research and drug development, and to advance our quest to find a cure for CF. Help us make CF stand for “Cure Found” You can make a difference.
The Greater New York Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is gearing up to roll out the 2013 nationally branded fundraising campaign, the Aptalis CF Cycle for Life. This premier cycling event empowers participants to take action and demonstrates their fight in finding a cure in a tangible, emotional and powerful way. The Aptalis CF Cycle For Life, raises critical funds for life-saving research, education and care programs for cystic fibrosis, a fatal genetic disease. Benefits for the cyclists are priceless, aside from helping find a cure: Post menopausal women are less likely to develop coronary diseases. Cycling is a superb cardiovascular workout. It strengthens the heart, improves blood circulation and reduces the fat levels in the blood. Bicycling is a low-impact aerobic workout that helps you experience the great outdoors. Experts believe that 15 minutes of sunshine helps generate vitamin D which can prevent osteoporosis – it’s good for your bones.
Experience all these benefits while supporting a great cause. Two incredible rides will be offered showcasing the vast diversity and beauty of historical streets of Brooklyn, or the picturesque North Fork and Long Island’s wine country. Cyclists may choose from a 32, 62 or 100 (Long Island only) mile route. The 32 mile course perfect for any skill level, or challenge yourself with a 62 or 100-mile ride for experienced cyclists. Each CF Cycle For Life event features well-stocked rest stops every 10-12 miles, bike mechanics along the route, support vehicles, ride marshals, meals and much more.)
CF Cycle For Life rides are hosted in dozens of cities across the U.S. and take bicyclists through some of the most scenic terrains in the nation to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. To learn more visit: Brooklyn – manhattan.cff.org/cycle Riverhead – longisland.cff.org/cycle
