Everyone has their own running quirks, whether it’s the way you plant your feet or use your arms. But with those things always comes a little room for improvement—especially if it means you’ll get more out of this exercise if you improve your form.
Try out the running tips below whether you’re running the trails or a marathon.
1. Keep your core engaged: You shouldn’t forget about this important step while running. Not only will it help you make the most out of your exercise, but it can also help sculpt your core in addition to other abdominal moves.
2. It’s all about the landing: Overstriding—landing with your feet in front of you—will cause you to brake slightly with every step. Doing this will make you spend more time on the ground and not transitioning to the next step. By landing under your center of mass, you’ll improve your stride.
3. Watch your head: If you look down at your feet when you run, don’t. Your ears should be bepositioned over your shoulders with your head up—if you don’t do this then you’ll find yourself having bring your knees higher which will take more energy you could be using elsewhere. Keep things at eye level.
4. Be mindful of your arms: The way you swing your arms during your run can make all the difference in whether your successful or not. Swing your arms in the direction you’re moving, not back and forth across your body.
