By Barbara Baez @BarbaraMBaez · On September 12, 2013

appleFiber, a word that comes up constantly when we talk about a healthy lifestyle. But what exactly is fiber and why is it so vital to have in our diets?

Fiber is that part of plant foods that your body can’t digest or absorb being considered an indigestible carbohydrate. But fiber is very different from other carbohydrates and much lower in calories!

You may not be able to digest it, but fiber is good for your body in many ways:

  • Heart Health: Fiber from whole grains helps reduce blood cholesterol, and may lower risk of heart disease.  It also lowers bad LDL cholesterol.
  • Digestive Health: Fiber helps keep the digestive system running smoothly, helping you to avoid constipation and the risk of diverticulitis.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: A fiber-rich diet helps curb hunger and aid in weight management keeping you feeling full and satisfied and more in control of your appetite and weight.

Fruits and vegetables are among the types of foods that you can consume to get the fiber necessary for your healthy diet:
