South African Olympic coach Anna Sofia Botha proves to us that age is just a number. At the Rio 2016 Olympics, Botha watched her athlete, Wayde van Niekerk, take gold and set the world record for the men’s 400-meter.
But as charming as she may appear, do not be fooled! Botha is a very tough coach. She is described by her athletes (also considered her children) as a “benevolent disciplinarian” and an amazing woman. It’s this same discipline that helped van Niekerk break the men’s 400-meter world record.
Botha mentions in an interview with The New York Times, “I have to read my athlete, his mind and read his body and listen to what his body tells me. I think I have the ability to know my athlete inside out.”
